BGMEA honours 29 garment-owner MPs

Dhaka, Jan 12 (bdnews24.com) – Top apparels body Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers' and Exporters' Association Monday accorded a reception to 29 garment industry owners elected to the ninth parliament, BGMEA president said.

"This is the first time so many garment industry owners got elected to the parliament," Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez said.

He urged the 29 MPs to create a 'Caucus' to play a prominent role in the parliament to resolve problems in the industry.

Parvez also suggested a high-level taskforce be formed headed by prime minister Sheikh Hsina, effective measures taken to stop hartal, resolve port, power and gas crises and reduce bank loan interests.

"We do not seek money from the government, we just want a pro-business policy."

Most of the 29 MPs elected in the Dec. 29 national elections including fisheries and livestock minister Abdul Latif Biswas are from the ruling Awami League, the BGMEA chief said.

Jatiya Party acting chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud and two former BGMEA presidents Mohammad Musharraf Hossain and Tipu Munshi are also among the newly-elected members of parliament.

Four of them belong to the other mainstream political party, BNP.

Minister Latif Biswas, Tipu Munshi, Musharraf Hossain and other MPs present promised help for the country's main export-earning sector.

President of apex trade body the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries Annisul Huq, among others, spoke.

The top garment body gave the MPs a welcome reception at the Sonargaon Hotel in the city on Monday night.

Only 18 of the industrialist MPs, however, attended the programme as the rest were abroad or ill, Parvez said.

Present at the function among others include newly-elected MPs Abdul Wadud Dara, Abdullah Al-Kaiser, AKM Rahmatullah, Chayan Islam, Hafiz Ahmed Mazumder, MA Talha, Nazrul Hamid Bipu, Nasim Osman, Shahriar Alam, Reza Ali, Rumana Mahmud, Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, Shafiqul Islam, Tajul Islam, Tanveer Siddiquee Joy and Zahirul Islam Bhuiyan Mohan.

Cambodian business men have the other way round. They need politicians standing behind them so that they can feel secure to run their businesses or they need help in time of difficulties and/or suppressing.
