While the whole world watches on to see who will win the 2020 United States presidential election, which saw Democrat candidate Joe Biden slightly take the edge over President Donald Trump yesterday, Khmer Times talks with Chheang Vannarith, president of Asian Vision Institute, to gain his insights in what the outcome will mean for Cambodia. In an exclusive interview, Vannarith predicts Biden will become president, and says this will change the landscape of the US’s sphere of influence within international relations, especially with the Asean and Cambodia.
KT: Whom do you think will be declared the US president for the next term and why?
Vannarith: It is over 80 percent certain that Joe Biden will win this presidential election. As of now [yesterday], he only needs
to win Nevada to reach 270 electoral votes, and this cannot be overturned even if President Donald Trump wins the remaining states. Trump is losing most likely because he has failed to deal with several key issues, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic racism. Trump may bring his loss to the Supreme Court, and votes may be counted again, but it will not change anything. One thing that is guaranteed is that Trump will remain a powerful figure in American politics.
