VietNamNet Bridge – More than 300 companies from 24 countries and territories will participate in the 19th annual textile and garment industry exposition opening today at HCM City International Exhibition and Convention Centre and running until Saturday.

Le Quoc An, chairman of the Viet Nam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex), which is co-organising the event with the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Exhibition Services Co and Hong Kong's CP Exhibitions, said he expected the expo would offer Vietnamese companies an opportunity to acquire advanced technology and equipment to increase product quality and production capacity.

Viet Nam's textile industry had enjoyed an average annual growth of 20 per cent over the past five years, An said, but the global economic downturn was expected to trim that growth rate significantly.

"We will try to reach an export turnover this year that at least matches last year's total of US$9.1 billion," said An. "The figure for 2010 is expected to be $10 billion." The industry's development plan (determined prior to the crisis) targeted export turnover of $12 billion by 2010, but An believed progress on achieving that goal would be delayed by a year.

As part of today's opening session of the exposition, senior officials of the ASEAN Federation of Textile Industries and non-member trade associations from China, India, Japan and South Korea were scheduled to participate in a roundtable discussion on the challenges and opportunities for the textile and garment industry in 2009.

Other events during the trade show would be a seminar on how Vietnamese companies can restructure business strategy and product development in the context of the economic crisis.

A case study focusing on a major garment brand would also be analysed.

A business-to-business meeting programme and a seminar on the Viet Nam textile and garment industry and markets for its exports were also planned.
